Wikipedia maintains software comparison pages which can be a good starting point for deciding which software to install.

Package management tools

The best way to install open source software is usually through a package management tool or installer because this ensures that lists of installed or available software can be accessed; software can be uninstalled and dependencies between different software tools can be tracked.

For Linux: Synaptic, Aptitude, yum, Urpmi (for Mandriva), YaST (for SUSE)
